A genuine delight to welcome to ARC one of the UK’s most celebrated and acclaimed folk musicians, and the world’s finest exponent of the traditional Northumbrian pipes.
Since emerging onto the folk scene in the late 1980s Kathryn Tickell has clocked up no less than fourteen studio albums, three appearances at The Proms, and prestigious collaborations with the likes of Sting, The Chieftains, Beth Nielson Chapman, The Penguin Café Orchestra and folk legend Linda Thompson.
That is in addition to receiving the coveted Queen’s Medal for Music and being crowned Musician of the Year at the 2013 BBC Folk Awards!
And her band The Side are no less accomplished. Harpist Ruth Wall has performed with Goldfrapp and is a regular collaborator with acclaimed composer Graham Fitkin, Louisa Tuck has been principal cellist with the Royal Northern Sinfonia since 2007 (and plays on the theme to Downton Abbey!), and accordion player Amy Thatcher also happens to be one of the country’s most in-demand clog dancers.
Together, they channel their diverse musical backgrounds into a powerful combination of sounds… from slow, evocative airs to life-affirming jigs and reels. Formed in 2013, they played their debut gig to a delighted Cambridge Summer Music Festival crowd, and have already gained rapturous reviews from both the mainstream and the specialist folk press. And all the while, they continue to drop tantalising hints about a forthcoming debut album. Fingers crossed!
