Emerging blinking into the New Wave revolution of the late 1970s, Squeeze racked up a string of perfectly-formed hits that heart-breakingly encapsulated the minutiae of everyday life. Take Me I’m Yours, Up the Junction, Labelled With Love, Another Nail in my Heart, Goodbye Girl, Cool for Cats, Black Coffee in Bed, Tempted and the magnificent Pulling Mussels (From the Shell)… incredible pop nuggets all.
Glenn Tilbrook, of course, was the voice of Squeeze but this is only a part of Glenn’s strange and beautiful musical meanderings over the years. His first two solo albums, The Incomplete Glenn Tilbrook and Transatlantic Ping Pong, were hugely acclaimed. And 2009’s Pandemonium Ensues, recorded with his band The Fluffers, was a brilliant shapeshifting wander from breezy pop to blue-eyed soul, featuring – slightly surreally, it has to be said – a guest vocal contribution from Johnny Depp.
Meanwhile, Squeeze have rightly become anointed as bona fide British pop legends, their reputation cemented with a 2012 BBC4 documentary that explored Glenn and musical partner Chris Difford’s legacy as the Lennon and McCartney of kitchen sink drama;
A remarkable 39 years since they formed, Glenn’s voice remains as heart-rendingly sweet and plaintive as ever, and his live solo performances are never less than a warm, intimate celebration of everything you’ve ever loved about this most homely ambassador for perfect British pop. Expect hits, covers, and a glorious sense of unpredictability.
